Journalism students covered the beat, Diversity in Arts & Culture, during spring semester 2016:
“We covered stories that focused on the ways people express themselves and the world around them. This created a response to our common values as a community.
“In the explorative nature of our reporting, we made a commitment to not be judgmental. We strived to understand the nature of the story, listen to diverse voices and reflect the impact it had on the community at large.”
Student-journalists were: Peyton M. Dalley; Chris Samuels; Jordan Senteno; and Joshua Soutas.
They reported on a variety of topics, businesses, people and issues in the community, including:
- Open-mic night at Alchemy Coffee, which draws amateur musicians and poets
- The Salt Lake Gallery Stroll and a “hip” gallery, Mod a-go-go
- Traveling art exhibitions that reach audiences throughout the state
- Utah’s Percent-for-Art Act, which helps fund the creation and maintenance of art in public spaces
