Student-journalists covered the refugee community in the Salt Lake Valley during Fall semester 2017.

The reporters were: Emily Anderson; Jace Barraclough; Devon Alexander Brown; Zach Carlson; Kaya Danae; Scott Funk; Blake Hansen; Blake Lancaster; Hayden S. Mitchell; Danny O’Malley; Wesley Ryan; Anna Stump; Katie Undesser; Alaynia Winter.

Their stories included: a profile of the Refugee Justice League, which promotes and defends the Constitutional rights of refugees; a piece on the benefits of the Fruits and Vegetables Prescription project; a description of Women of the World and its capacity-building work; an overview of conditions for gay men in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.

Their in-depth reporting coincided with drastic reductions in the number of refugees who will be allowed to resettle in the United States in 2018 and a weeklong interactive exhibition, Forced from Home, hosted in Salt Lake City by Doctors Without Borders/Medicins sans Frontieres.

Students enjoyed, and live-tweeted, a spoken-word performance by J MASE III at the University of Utah on Oct. 5, 2017. Students also created a Google Map with dozens of pinpoints highlighting resources for refugees, including community centers, organizations and schools.

Stories included profiles of the International Rescue Committee and other organizations in Salt Lake City; an article about The School for New Americans in West Valley City; and a story about the Lost Boys of Sudan.
